Weekly Super-Boost

Hope you are doing good.

Before starting off with the inspirational updates I sent this week, I want to talk to you about something.

Recently, many heart-wrenching incidents have happened in the world. A young man shot many little children in a school in Connecticut. A group of men raped a young girl in New Delhi. While such incidents make us gasp in horror, they also raise some questions: What can we do to prevent such things from happening? Also, what can we do to ensure that we all live happily and don't harm each other like that?

Bans on guns and more policing are temporary solutions. In the long run, if we are to all live happily, we - people like you and I could do two simple things: take more personal responsibility and help other people around us. When I say personal responsibility, I am talking about doing things that truly make us happy everyday. I am talking about helping others be happy. I am talking about making our own life better by adopting tiny new habits like exercising, being grateful, and reading and helping others do the same.

Now - how can doing things that make us happy, and taking action to improve our life prevent rapes and shootouts, I can hear you say.

Well, tell me then, would any person who pursued his deepest happiness, and helped others do the same shoot people or carry out rapes? If these men could only have taken more responsibility for their lives, pursued their dreams, handled their emotions better - they would never do the things they did. They were frustrated and had no idea what they were doing with their own life. It is when people give up on their life completely that they descend to such low levels.

Therefore, here's what I suggest we can do to make the world a better place and to live happily.

1) Make sure you pursue your own deepest happiness. Do atleast one thing everyday that makes you deeply happy.

2) Try to help people around you. How about surprising a stranger today by paying for the guy behind you in the metro ticket line? Or by paying for the guy behind you in the McDonalds line? How about one act of kindness a week?

3) Keep taking action on at least one small thing that is important to you everyday. Start exercising for 15 minutes a day (if that is important to you). Or reading for 15 minutes a day. Or writing. Or creating something.

As you do these things, and as you help others live their best lives, the rapists and shooters will slowly disappear. No one is evil when he is born. It is after years of not knowing how to handle their frustration and neglect that these people act like beasts. As more and more people like you and me take more responsibility for their lives and become happier, people like these will decrease. And as we perform tiny acts of kindness everyday, happy people will increase. Slowly, we'll all start becoming friends and happy buddies.

I know all this sounds far-fetched but honestly, this is the only long term solution I can see. Take greater responsibility of your own life today. Figure out one small thing you can do to become a better person. Maybe be aware of your anger the next time you're angry instead of shouting out? Or don't eat fast food for a month? Or send an anonymous greeting card to a person you don't even know? Every small change you make is contributing towards a better society. This is how change begins.
